Beating Plastic Pollution: Point’s Support on World
Cleanup Day
Every year, millions of people around the globe unite on World Cleanup Day to take action against one of our planet’s most critical environmental challenges: waste. This year, the United Nations Environment Programme or UNEP, has set the theme for World Environment Day as “Beat Plastic Pollution.”
It’s no secret that plastic pollution has reached an ominous tipping point. As per a report from the UN, more than 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced per annum, with as much as half of that figure designed for single use. Less than 10% is recycled, and the result?
Our oceans are filled with debris, our landfills are overflowing, and microplastics are affecting multiple aspects of our lives. For us at Point, this problem is not abstract; it directly affects the communities, shoppers and the brands that we serve.
Looking Beyond a Single Day
While World Cleanup Day ignites awareness globally, the reality is that solutions to plastic pollution must extend far beyond a date on the calendar. The true opportunity lies in rethinking packaging, supply chains, and shopper experiences for a more sustainable future.
Designing out plastic wherever possible: Through innovative shopper experiences, alternative packaging solutions, and the optimisation of raw materials, brands are finding ways to cut down on unnecessary plastic.
Driving smarter supply chains: Waste reduction is achieved through efficiency. From production through to distribution, better practices minimise environmental footprints.
Engaging with individuals where it matters most: Sustainability is a shared process. Campaigns and retail solutions can inspire behaviours that ripple through communities.
All in all, reducing plastic waste is not only about cleaning up what’s already here, but also about redesigning how products reach people in the first place.
Voices from Our Sustainability Team
As sustainability expert Chris O’Brien explains:
“World Cleanup Day is an opportunity to roll up our sleeves, but also to reflect. Every piece of plastic we collect or design out of our products tells a story of consumption that can be done differently. Businesses have the power to design those new stories, where brands delight shoppers without leaving a heavy footprint on the planet.”
Chris’s words reflect a truth that guides much of the work in our industry: the solutions are already within reach. Through creativity, technology, and collaboration, the shift towards a future that is plastic-free can be accelerated.
Why Should This Matter for Brands and Consumers?
Today, consumers are more aware than ever before of the environmental cost of their choices. Deloitte conducted a global survey that found that nearly 6 in every 10 shoppers are willing to change their purchasing habits in an effort to reduce environmental impact.
For brands, this is not just a challenge, but an opportunity: reducing plastics in packaging and retail environments not only contributes to sustainability, it also builds stronger trust with customers.
Looking Ahead to a Brighter, Cleaner Future
World Cleanup Day symbolises a movement much bigger than a single day of action. Beating plastic pollution will take concerted efforts, imagination, and perseverance. But it is possible, if we act now, act together, and act with unified purpose.
